Margarita Moreno Manager, Document Supply Service, National Library of Australia I joined the National Library of Australia in 1988 as a serials cataloguer. Two years later, I moved to the Australian Bibliographic Network office (ABN) which offered bibliographic, cataloguing and interlibrary loan services to member libraries. I spent the next 10 years working in various positions assisting members use the services effectively, managed the CJK service and training section and participating in a number of projects to develop new services as the technology changed. In 1999 the service moved to a new distributed architecture and as part of the implementation team, I managed the acceptance testing of the new Kinetica service. I moved to the Document Supply Service at the National Library of Australia in 2000. I had some experience in supporting libraries use the National interlibrary loans system and was interested in understanding the issues in resource sharing more broadly. Since joining the Document Supply Service I was involved with the National Resource Sharing Working Group which developed the Interlibrary Resource Sharing code (sets out the recommended service levels and delivery timeframe for ILL request), conducted the interlibrary loans and document delivery benchmarking study (2001); and developed the training program in response to the survey. I was also on the organising committee for the 8th IFLA ILDS conference (2003) and the Forum and Field Day (2002). More recently I managed the implementation of the Relais system to automate the document supply services which will allow the library to integrate all of the requesting services in the one system. I am currently a member of a number of resource sharing groups: the

Advisory Group, the RLG SHARES Practitioners Council and I am member
of the IFLA Standing committee on interlibrary loan and Resource Sharing.

AbstractIn mid 2005 the Document Supply Service of the National Library began its automation project. There were two main objectives: firstly to improve the services to customers measured by turnaround time; secondly to streamline the ILL/DD workflows in order to achieve the first objective as well as reduce operating costs. 18 months later, what efficiencies have been gained and did we achieve our goals? This paper will explore the changes introduced to the National Library of Australia, Document Supply Service as the result of automation. We will report on the improvements made to workflows, customer services, and overall impact to the operating budget. |
